Articles ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘the’ and no article – Lesson 9

How do we use the articles ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘the’ and no article? This is a difficult subject for students of English, and I hope this intermediate lesson will help you understand how they are used. Please try this quiz

The first time something is mentioned
When it doesn’t matter which one, or you don’t know which one
When the object is singular and countable
With professions

Use THE
When there is only one
When we already know which one
With mountain ranges
With groups of islands

With groups of people (nations)
With superlatives
With inventions

Use NO ARTICLE
With indefinite plural or uncountable nouns
With names
With towns and cities
With countries
With continents
With 1 Lake / 1 Mountain
With planets (Note these exceptions! the Earth, the Sun and the Moon too)

    Hello and Namaste from India :
    I'm giving 2 sentences tell me with article error can you please explain me what are the errors with those 2 sentences with proper rule:
    1:-(a)The need to set up
    (b)a good library in the locality
    (c)has been in the minds of people
    (d)for some time now.
    2:-(a)Most people would have
    (b)attended the union meeting
    (c)if they had
    (d)had longer notice of it

    I think Americans will say … He is in THE hospital, to mean that he is a patient in hospital. Is this a difference from British English?

    "London is capital of Great Britain" – this sentence was first what we had to know in Ukrainian & Russian schools . and sometimes, when you are asking somebody – "Do you speak English ?" you will hear "Yes, London is capital of Great Britain" 🙂 this means what his English is not good 🙂
    PS. I wrote it only for good mood 🙂

    to tell the truth … I never use these articles in my speech and I can't be bothered. And if people struggle understanding me because of that – that's their propblem, isn't it?
