Discover more scintillating tips, just like those in the video:

Maybe the German articles – der, die and das – aren’t that hard after all. You may have been led to believe that there is no rhyme or reason behind the way articles collocate with their nouns. That’s actually quite far from the truth. There’s often a clue to the article you have to use in the suffix of the noun you’re saying. For example, every word ending in -ung or -schaft is ALWAYS feminine. Just knowing that rule helps you cover quite a lot of words in German. Check out the video for more!

And to make things more difficult again: Schaft is a word itself, meanuing shaft or handle. And it is masculine. So it is der Schwertschaft

It is not actually any word ending in -ung that has "die" as its article, but words that are suffixed in this way. e.g. der Seitensprung.

I'm German, I saw this video and had to click on it. Like seriously I didn't know that. I just use the articles. We didn't have that in school either despite so many foreign students ever since elementary school.
